Otakon 2005: The play and hope no one plug.
By Vlad
Prelude to Otakon:
Ok, that is it. I have been working like a mummy for 3 months for this, why like a mummy? Dont ask, Im rambling as usual. Many many choices have been made and now Im aware that those werent the most wise. I didnt book in time for the Otakon and that did raise a lot of strees on me.
Otakon Act I: Hell & heaven.
Weird weird stuff did happen in the way to Otakon. But I will keep it as detailed as my little fragile mind could remember:
We got a hell night [by brother and me]: lack of sleep and a very very unconfortable night. However we did manage to get in the plane. We have a rushed breakfast but that was worth the shot, as the food in the airplanes was just snacks. We did arrive to Baltimore without problems, but then when we did try to catch the light train, i was gettin the tickets when it did departs.
Bummer, as I was assuming that the convention will reach their cap limit around 2pm -_- iI was really stressed about it. The next trail did depart in half an hour. It did arrive in the Convention Center really quickly. I did try to contact Madsen who was... "hidding" somewhere, as no one from the guys that help me out (Thanks you Nick, Lollipop Girl and Grumpy). We did locate madsen after looking for him like for, well.. some time. He did recognize me and in that way, the otakon guys did give me an extra pass without any futher explanation. *Bows* to Madsen, you did rock dude. And kudos to the otakon staff, who, regardless i was asking something like a groupie looking for a rock star ("Yeah, he knows me, he tell me to look for him here"), were really nice. A odd thing did happen, Brain, the CAD author did pass by the LG boot when I was there. Dont ask what happen there. After that, eveyrhting reduces to:
Go to the hotel, then shower, then food [damn good fries and root beer!] and then... going back to the otakon :)
Walk walk walk, instert twice the fun for each walk, some browsing and some shopping. Then back to the hotel and catch on some sleep.
Between the walks and the return to the hotel, some stuff that I should highligth:
Huge screens and lots lots lots lots of video games at the Game room (that was damn sweet, but I could play anywhere/anytime I want, and otakon is only a single time of the year, so why I will stay there for long?).
The COS players, my humble regards to everyone who did their outfit for the otakon. some of the stuff there was damn impressive.
And its just the first day...yeah baby.. ;)
Act II: Lost in Otakon
We do wake up, kinda late, get our stuff ready and head to otakon after having some breakfast. I did reach the LG boot too late as they were in a webcomic panel, so I did reach the place and see the end of the panel. I was lucky enough to enjoy some of the humour of the webcomic guys there. I did spot some [funny things]. At the end of the panel, I did have a brief talk (*arse smoochga*) with Scott R. after that, I did head to the Lg boot again. Once there, I did have the pleasure of talk with Lem, which is a ubber nice fellow! After stop staling him, I did return to LG where they did ask me to record thm in tape in the the Megatokyo Panel. And because of that, we got first row locations for the panel. The Funny thing for me is that I dont want to see the panel. I wasnt even aware of such event, I know that Fred G. was in the convention but not entire sure that a entire panel will be dedeicated for him, however, the last year their presentations always gather a damn huge crow and controling the otaku mob can be damn tricky. After the panel, we did wander in the Otakon. The dealers room and the artist alley where a such a deligth. But it was also painful: Lots lots ots and fucking lots of really sweet stuff and no budget to get them :(
I was just to get a die cast metal macross/robotech valkirie, but paying $40 usd for that was... arrgh... to much for my budget. Also I did see some TIE fighters and a XWing models, but they were like 20 and 25 usd each [Jap Import], I didnt get them as I will never have the time to assamble, and worst, to paint them. Additional to that, I dont have a place in my current home to show them.
However, I did get a VG poster (*arse smoochga v.0.2*) and I get a picture of myself with Scott.
And that more or less was the last day of Otakon for me.
Act III: How to walk a lot in Sunday and get blisters in your foot.
We did reach the light rail to get in Penn. Station. but it was sunday and I didnt notice that sunday has another schedule. We did have to walk from the hotel to the camden yards station, then hit the road to peen. station. We did catch a train and it drop us in Union St. From that, we did walk all around the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the mall, Lincon Monument, the Vietnam Memorial, the mirror and the WWII memorial. Then we did some shopping (I need to replace the wacom to continue making the comic). After locationg the stores and getting our gears ready, we did return to the hotel around 9pm. Once again the light train did elude us, as the last one departs in sunday at 8:07 and we did reach the bwi aiport around 9+. Somehow it was better to be there, even if the cab was more expensive. The area that we did walk to reach the penn. station from the Conv. Centre was pretty scary. Some dinner and then we sleep kinda something as we did start to packing everything for the next day.
Act IV: Welcome back to the real world.
Last day at baltimore: We did get souvenirs for the family, we get some food for breakfast, more shopping, return to the hotel before noon, get our stuff ready. Check out and catch the light rail to the BWI airport. this time everything was smooth. Except taht our bigger piece of luggage was damn heavy and carry it from the Pier 5 to the Convention Center station was not funny at all. There's still lots of things to do, as I dont have it clear how to reach in the most economical and practical situation our final destination, as we going to land pretty much late. Talking about it, some notes:
Epilogue: Or Else, I must to to otakon the next year ^^
- Nothing taste like home. But it taste like chicken.
- I did catch some guy talking to some other guys when entering the megtokyo panel, when directed as everyone else to a place were to sit: "yeah, rigth, now they tell US were to sit.." in a way taht sounds like "yeah right, we are so inmature that they have to tell us were to sit". Honestly, that is damn true dude, we, the fans are inmature (Im a damn fan too y' know?). When you are talking about a mob of fans, you have to ensure everyone enjoy whatever you could enjoy and make rules, if there's no rules, anarchy emerges and thta can be dangerous. Ok, you can control yourself, that does not mean that everyone can do it? So for that guy who did say such thing, dude, that was damn weak. Next time, you organize the schedule and the covention, and you can say and let people do whatever yhey want, that will be your party, but otakon is from eveyrone to everyone. So, dont be such asshole next time ok? :)
- I did see some extra nice COS players, but as my camera doesnt have a damn flash, the photos are too dark to be shown. Also, I didnt have a picture of madsen and myself (grr!).
- A guy of the Convention center staff did say "There's nothing natural in here", I didnt answer him anything as I was damn tired and stressed in that moment. And i will say, indeed, there was nothing normal in the otakon, but that's the way taht we are ;)
- The models at the artist alley were damm good, as well as the pictures and works there.
- Root beer is the win
- +2 Experience for the next year (Like +2 in Knowledge)
- Fan videos! Someone send me a url where donwload them! >_<
- Love the damn huuuuuuuge bookstores with coffe shops inside. I think I should start a franchise in Mexioo about it ;)
- Inspector gadget dress was the best and more original COS player in the otakon
Disclaimer: I didnt run this in the spell checker, and grammar is not my forte.
